How to Use the 2020 Pantone Color of the Year at Your Wedding

It’s official: We have a new color of the year! Yesterday, Pantone announced its Color of the Year for 2020, and we’re totally here for it. Their pick? PANTONE 19-4052, aka, Classic Blue!
The company says the shade is “a timeless and enduring hue elegant in its simplicity,” more specifically saying it resembles the color of the sky at dusk. And while Pantone describes the hue—which is darker than sky blue but lighter than midnight blue—with descriptors like “tranquil,” “easily relatable,” and “relaxed,” their reasoning for choosing a favorite color such as blue, especially after vibrant shades like Living Coral and Ultra Violet in previous years, is quite simple: It’s a universal favorite! “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
And while we’re always here for shades that shake up the fashion and design landscape, we also can’t help but love a classic such as Classic Blue. We trust that you will too so we rounded up a list of ways to incorporate the trendy yet timeless color into every element of your wedding day from the fashion to the favors.
Keep reading for 15 ways to use Classic Blue, the Pantone Color of the Year, at your wedding in 2020.
1) Embrace Colored Paper
Set the scene for your big day before it even starts with an impactful invitation! Classic Blue is a deep enough hue that you can use it for either the text or background on your paper suite. That said, we think it pairs especially well with a gold metallic accent..
2) Buy a Pretty Ring Box
Any wedding day involves moments that are “for the ‘gram,” so take advantage and order props to style day-of accessories like your jewelry, invitation suite, and bridal shoes.
3) Rock Statement Shoes
Brides, listen up: Take your “something blue” to the next level with an unexpected accessory like these blue velvet platforms.
4) Think Beyond the Tux
Guys, too, can hop on this trend by rocking a blue suit. We love this look, especially when paired with accessories like a tonal tie and boutonniere. And the best part? Even the little attendants can take part with a coordinating suit or bowtie!
5) Incorporate Flowers
Blue flowers can be tricky because you don’t want them to appear artificial, but that doesn’t mean chic options aren’t out there! Delphiniums, muscari, and darker-hued hydrangeas are a few of our favorites.
6) Dress Your Wedding Party
You can always ask your wedding party to wear the same dress in Classic Blue. But if you’re looking for a cohesive yet mismatched look, we suggest sharing the Classic Blue swatch (that’s what it’s here for, right!?) with your bridesmaids and letting them choose any style they please.
7) Accessorize the Little Ones
If you’re having flower girls, consider adding pops of blue with their accessories. This little sash and berry crown couldn’t be any more adorable.
8) Decorate the Altar
When designing the focal point of your ceremony, it’s important to make an impression but not take away from what’s most important: the two of you! We love the look of a greenery altar with an asymmetrical floral touch for this reason.
9) Customize Cocktail Napkins
Any day-of paper good can be done in a blue hue, and these cocktail napkins are no exception. If you order in bulk, you can stock your bar cart with a dose of Classic Blue after the wedding.
10) Set Up a Lounge
This is a color about relaxation, meaning it fits especially well in lounge areas that are all about comfort. The shade can be tailored to any style, whether you opt for a neutral base with pops of blue or a monochromatic look.
11) Have an Escort Card Display
For a more romantic interpretation on Classic Blue, consider using it in a watercolor wash as this couple did for their escort card display. A watercolor wash can be done on any day-of signage and printed material from the invitation suite to the menu. That said, we’re especially into this treatment for an escort card display because it feels like a transition from day to night (aka what the color is all about!).
12) Use a Dark Linen
Want to wow your guests? Forget a classic white tablecloth and do Classic Blue instead! We love how a dark base can make any table pop, but especially so when paired with romantic candlelight, neutral plates, and woven touches like these rattan chairs.
13) Set the Table
While we’re obsessed with dark linens, we’re also here for a bare tabletop with blue accents. When setting a table with such a bold color, it’s important to consider balance and place the color accordingly. Take this photo as an example: The blue works because it’s placed strategically at different heights—the plate, the goblets, and, finally, the candelabra—so it doesn’t overwhelm the eye at once.
14) Have a Statement Cake
In a wedding cake, Classic Blue goes a long way! We love the look of a single-tiered confection topped with a romantic wreath of olive leaves and dark-hued roses.
15) Create a Mood-Late-Night!
As you may know, we’re usually opposed to colored uplighting. (Tip: Warm, amber-toned lighting presents any space and any guest, for that matter, in a more flattering light!) But we know that a vibrant hue can change any room from romantic to disco-ready, which is why we are going to make an exception to our rule and say go for the blue light—as long as it’s after the cake cutting and, possibly, includes these heart-shaped neon lights in the background.

Beyond the “I Do”: 10 Ways to Have a Meaningful Ceremony

With all the million wedding planning ideas and to-dos swirling around in your head, we wanted to make things a little easier on you and create a list of things for you and your soon-to-be-spouse to think of to make it feel personal and meaningful. So take note of these 10 things that will ensure a meaningful wedding ceremony feels like you because as long as it feels like you, mission accomplished!
1. Determine the “Heartbeat” of Your Ceremony
This may seem a bit tedious because who likes homework, but we think you’ll like this one! Snuggle up on the couch with your fav beverage of choice and think about things that are important to you both. This will help determine the “heartbeat” or overall vibe of your ceremony. What elements about other weddings hit you right in the feels? Include those too if they speak to your heart! Do you want traditional elements? Do you want a religious ceremony? These are great questions to ask yourself and each other while you try not to cry in all the wedding videos we know you’ll inevitable watch. Because we’re also #guilty.
2. Create the Soundtrack of Your Relationship
Now that you have a sense of the overall vibe of your wedding ceremony, it’s time to think music! There are a lot of moments to incorporate music into your wedding ceremony. Family entrances, bridal party, your entrance, any songs you’d like sung live or played during communion, a sand ceremony, hand ceremony…you get the idea. Again, do you want traditional songs? Or do you want to include that funny song you guys both secretly love, or the song that was playing during your first kiss? Include music that has meaning to you! Every time you listen to that song afterwards will bring you right back to your wedding day.
3. Write Your Vows
You want to give yourself plenty of time to write something that’s authentic and meaningful without feeling rushed. Chat with your partner about a general feel or outline you’d like to each follow and then get cracking! If you’re feeling stuck, start with this guide!
4. Include Your Loved Ones
There are a few different ways to include your family and friends in your wedding ceremony that will just warm your heart. The most obvious one being, have a friend of family member officiate your wedding. Just think of all the personal details they can incorporate including your love story from their perspective. So sweet! You can also have a friend do a reading (see more on that at number 8!) or one of my favs is a “ring warming”. Whether this just be the parents, or maybe the bridal party, but the ring will be past between a few people before reaching the bride and groom. As they pass the ring, they are sending it with a well-wish on your marriage therefore “warming” the band for you and your spouse.
5. Personalize Details
Whether you use a line from your song as a couple in the programs or include sentimental objects from your relationship in the wedding, it will make your ceremony feel so much more personal and meaningful. That beautiful goblet from your grandmother might be perfect for communion or the roses you kept from your first date can be included in a bouquet. It doesn’t necessarily have to stand out for your guests, but will be something that you know is there and will warm your heart.
6. Incorporate Cultural Traditions
The blending of cultures amongst two people is always a gorgeous and heart-felt moment. So if your husband is Scottish, does he want to wear a kilt or include a hand-fasting ceremony? Or how about jumping over the broom? Or including a specific color that has special meaning. The list can go on and on that can allow both people to be equally represented in what will be a forever equal partnership.
7. Rethink the Ceremony Layout
Have you thought about having your wedding in the round? Or how about a U shape? If you have the flexibility in your ceremony location and want it to feel more intimate, there are several different layouts to consider that you should definitely chat about with your wedding planner. Again, thinking back to number 1, what do you want your wedding ceremony to feel like?
8. Research Ceremony Readings
This goes back to item number one on your checklist, but if you’re wanting to include a ceremony reading or two, you will want to do your research so it still connects with the overall vibe you’re going for. Whether that be deep or light-hearted, you can pull ideas from your favorite movies, a spiritual book, one of the many romantic sonnets by Shakespeare or your other favorite author, or even a sappy moment from your favorite TV show. Nothing here is off-limits.
9. Include Your Pup
Honestly, this is our favorite one to consider. Do you want to have a dog-of-honor like these cuties? Or maybe they will just make a surprise appearance that is a delight to everyone. Your dog could even act as a ring bearer or flower girl. Either way, including your furry friend, who is really family, is a great idea to consider.
10. Include Your Favorite Treat
Are you having a morning wedding and just love mimosas? How about a welcome drink into the ceremony? Or maybe you just love confetti, have your guests toss some as you walk down the aisle. Or you guys are chocolate lovers and met on a tour of a chocolate museum and want to include a piece of chocolate on each chair. As long as it’s not outdoors during summer, go for it! Your favorite treats don’t have to be saved exclusively for your reception. I mean it is YOUR wedding day after all.
We hope these 10 ideas will help create a meaningful wedding ceremony that feel like you, and give you the chance to reflect on the love you share for each other amidst all the crazy wedding planning details swirling around in your head! Oh while you want to ensure you have a rain backup plan if your wedding is outdoors, you might just want the rain to come after seeing this gorgeous rainy day wedding!
